The Law
You must have a valid licence which can be any of the following:-
- A Provisional Licence with Moped
- Entitlement Category 'P' for 16 year olds
- A Provisional Licence with Motorcycle
- Entitlement Category 'A'
- Full Car Licence, this automatically provides
- provisional motorcycle entitlement.
- To ride a motorcycle you must be 17 or over.
From 1st January 1997 you must have successfully completed Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) before you can ride on the road as a learner.
You must also have passed the Theory Test before going on to take your Part 2 Test (this applies to full car licence holders from 1st February, 2001).
There are four Part 2 licence schemes available:

- Direct Access
- Accelerated Access
- CBT
As required by Government legislation you must successfully attain CBT Compulsory Basic Training before you are allowed to ride a motorcycle up to 125cc on the road as a learner. If you fail your first attempt all further tuition is *FREE* until you reach the required standard.
When you have successfully completed your CBT you will be issued with a DL196 Certificate of Completion which will be valid for 2 years.
You should keep this certificate with your licence as this is proof and validates your licence to ride on the road with 'L' plates displayed. |
